It takes a Neighborhood
This article is about New Orleans, and hurricane Katrina.
Because of the hurricane they have had to demolish damaged houses and abandon
neighborhoods. The article also says that they wanted to shrink the city by
using Planned Shrinkage. Residents have
returned and new residents have joined New Orleans. Neighborhoods would take
things into their own hands and the government finally helped with additional
resources. The article also talks about shotgun houses. The house is like a
hall way that goes from the front door to the back door. The house so straight enough
that if you fired a shot gun it would go right through, that is how it got its
name. What the inside looked like would
vary from house to house. Many locals took matters into their own hands and
with the help from thousands of volunteers they made houses that were damaged livable
again. They also fixed up many other things like playgrounds, parks, schools,
and churches. Little of this made it to the national media even though it has
been five years since Hurricane Katrina and Rita.
